happy 2009!

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

On this the final of day of 2008 we would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year!

We’d also like to thank everyone who has supported our efforts to bring GREYHOUNDS to fruition:

We’d like to bark out to everyone at Verve Editions, The Grillo Group and Stewart, Tabori & Chang, friends, fellow greyhound guardians, family, co-workers and all those who collaborated in any small way on this book. We would also like to thank the reviewers who have given us some wonderful publicity and support in our endeavor too. We appreciate you all.

We are proud and grateful that we were given the opportunity to fulfill a passionate mission: to bring this wonderful breed to a broader audience through the book.

2008 has been a year of exploration, inspiration and education for us.

Our resolutions for 2009 are:

  • To continue the quest for a tipping point for retired racing greyhounds or the person who can help us find it.
  • To publicize the book beyond the boundaries we have reached in 2008.
  • To find sponsorship to take the book on tour including an exhibition that can be used to fundraise nationally for greyhound rescue.
  • To continue to educate the public as to the merits of the greyhounds as companion animal.
  • To take even more great photographs of interiors, architecture and dogs than in 2008.
  • To enjoy and appreciate every day with friends, family and those beloved greyhounds!

greyhounds on L.A. unleashed

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Last week Barbara was interviewed by Los Angeles Times film critic Betsy Sharkey, who has been chronicling the adoption of her greyhound, Riley, for the Los Angeles Times blog L.A. Unleashed.

Barbara wants to thank Betsy for taking the time to speak with her, this is one of the best articles on Greyhounds the Book that we’ve read yet! We’re thrilled!

Sharkey writes:

Barbara Karant is shameless when it comes to greyhounds, and that’s a very good thing for the rest of us. A professional photographer who usually has architecture, interior design or art in sharp focus, her world changed in 1997 when she got her first dog and her first greyhound, Easton. Although maybe it’s not so surprising that she was drawn to the breed since the architecture of these dogs is the essence of beauty and function, power and grace.

Thanks again Betsy, looking forward to speaking again soon!

missing greyhound redux

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

The search continues daily with a concentrated effort to garner additional volunteers for the weekend.

Here is our Saturday and Sunday Plan:

Watson has basically stayed within a radius of 6 blocks or so. The map is attached. It looks big but when you look at the sightings they are all very concentrated.

We would like to meet for a briefing at 10:15 am on Saturday at the Barnes and Noble book store on Webster and Clybourn. There is free parking and is out of the congestion for all of us to gather.

The plan is to hoof our way from Racine east along several streets heading East.
We will each take like every other street and head east. Another batch of us will start at Clark again from Diversey to Armitage and head West.

If we have enough people we should also add people starting North going south and South going North.

WHAT WE WILL DO
We will hand out postcard flyers, encourage all residents to help gather info and call us and in the “hot zone” see if we can get people to look out and help us nab him.

pdn portfolio of the month

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Last week for her presentation at the Apple Store, Barbara shared some of her newest work, which juxtaposes Greyhound imagery with her commercial architectural photographs. The resulting pairings are unexpected, clever and thought provoking. The pairings received great reception at the talk and Barbara thus decided to debut this work on her PDN Photoserve Portfolio.

This new portfolio has just been named one of PDN’s Portfolios of the Month.
